About SavvySaver

We wanted allowance to work for our family, too.

We're a family of five in San Jose, California, with kids aged 10, 8, and 2. SavvySaver started with a problem in our own home.

We had a plan. Then came allowance day.

We wanted our older kids to practice making their own money decisions. A regular allowance seemed like a good place to start. They could spend a little, save for something they wanted, and learn what happens when the money runs out.

But we couldn't keep it going. Some weeks we forgot. Other weeks we remembered but didn't have the cash. What we owed each kid became a running total in our heads.

Then we'd be out, and a kid would want to buy something. Their allowance was supposed to cover it, but the right cash was never there when we needed it. So we'd pay anyway and tell ourselves we'd sort it out later. The kids lost track of what they'd spent and what was left. So did we.

It's hard to teach kids to keep track of their money when you can't keep track of it yourself.

So I built something for us.

I wanted one place to record allowance and spending, where the kids could see what they had without having to ask us to remember. That became SavvySaver. I built it for our own family, to make the everyday part of allowance easier to keep up with.

We keep the real cash and cards. The app keeps track of the amounts and gives the kids a place to see their spending, savings, and goals. It doesn't connect to a bank account or move money.

Friends helped it grow.

I shared it with friends and got a ton of feedback. Other parents had run into the same problems, but every family had its own way of handling allowance. Their questions, suggestions, and honest reactions helped me make it better.

I'm still improving it, and I wanted to share it more broadly. If allowance has been hard to stick with in your home, I hope SavvySaver helps your family, too.

From our family in San Jose to yours.
